We believe that the true essence of stewardship is leaving things in a better place than when you found them. In 2015, Louis Ciminelli had the foresight to purchase this small, yet treasured vineyard planted in 2006 by Dick and Edie Engelhard, a couple who shared this same core value.

For years, Dick and Edie affectionally farmed their four-acre vineyard in the western hillsides of Calistoga, selling their fruit to an elite group of winemakers, including Bob Levy for Harlan and the Napa Valley Reserve and Thomas Rivers Brown for Hobel. When the two decided that the time had come to pass the baton of stewardship, Ciminelli understood the gravity of that responsibility and entrusted David Abreu with the notable role of guiding this vineyard into its next generation with him, bringing it to ever-higher levels of quality.

Beyond its pedigree, the Engelhard Vineyard speaks to us, an off-the-beaten-path site of rugged beauty and serenity. Today, five acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot are carved from this bucolic site and serve as the source for the inaugural release of Impensata’s Proprietary Red.
